What our editors recently bought (at a discount, of course)

When we launched The Clip, the whole purpose was to let you get to know us better. Our goal was to bring you into our day-to-day life, to show you what we do to help you save money. Sometimes, that means that we home in on why we don’t operate on the philosophy that “more is more” or what our journey as a business has been like in recent years. 

Other times, we get to bring you behind the scenes to see what kind of exciting stuff we’re doing at Coupons.com and the fun insights we’re learning from our shoppers. Both show you more about who we are and can help you save money along the way.

And today, well, it’s a get-to-know-us kind of day at The Clip. Because today, we’re checking in with a few of the team to find out what they’ve bought recently and—more importantly—how much they saved while doing so!

To kick us off, I spoke with Cassidy, one of our editors in our Atlanta office, and she told me about how she saved a little extra on a summer necessity. 

“I recently restocked my go-to La Roche-Posay sunscreen. I swear by it for daily sun protection. I'd actually been running low for about a week but held off on purchasing because I knew Prime Days was coming up,” she told me. 

“My patience paid off with a modest but satisfying 5% discount. While it wasn't a massive savings, every bit counts, especially on premium skincare that I repurchase regularly.

“The decision was pretty straightforward. I needed a product I already trust, saw an opportunity to save a few dollars, and timed my purchase strategically. It's a perfect example of how I approach shopping. I wait for the right moment to buy essentials rather than purchasing at full price out of convenience.”

With Cassidy’s story fresh in my mind, I messaged Parvin, a fellow editor in our Kuala Lumpur office, to ask him the same question. If Cassidy’s savings are classified as small but meaningful, I’d say Parvin’s are of the month-making variety. 

Here’s what he had to say: “I needed a new pair of running shoes since, after about a year and a half of use, my old ones were finally worn out.

So I pasted the code, and it worked. My final total was about $37*, including the $3 shipping fee because I didn’t hit the minimum requirement. 

“Honestly, I didn't mind paying the delivery fee because I ended up saving $61 on a brand new pair of running shoes.”

Next, I reached out to Aina, another of our editors in the Kuala Lumpur office. As a dog owner, I really related to what she shared with me about her stand-out savings of late. 

“Recently, I panicked when I realized my cat’s food was about to run out. The pet parents among us will relate to the anxiety I felt!” We do, Aina, we really do. She continued: “After that realization, I immediately went on Shopee, a popular online shopping platform in Malaysia, to place an order. 

“After comparing a few sellers, I picked one with plenty of positive reviews and a great starting price. I also liked that the shop guaranteed a delivery date, so I knew my order would arrive before my cat’s food ran out. 

“Before checking out, I always look for store vouchers and Shopee coupons, and this time I managed to use both a free shipping voucher and a $5 discount coupon. It's become my habit, especially when your cat has expensive taste!” We love to see someone successfully stack savings like Aina did. Before talking with my colleagues, I hadn’t planned to add in one of my purchases. But Cassidy’s find reminded me that I also got an exciting deal in the Prime Day sales. So here’s what I bought recently for a great price. 

I live outside of London (I'm one of the team based in our UK office), but I’m originally from South Carolina. Earlier this summer, I was visiting my family, and we did a big beach trip on the SC coast. That involved nightly ghost crab searches with all the kids. My brothers had these cool LuminAID rechargeable solar-powered lanterns that we used to scout crabs. They were a big hit among the kids, but they were also incredibly practical.  

I liked them so much I planned to buy one when I got back to the UK. When I did, I was less excited at the prospect of spending about $44* on one. I saved the lantern for later in my Amazon cart and nearly forgot about it.

Then Prime Day hit, and I happened to see that the lantern was on sale for about 50% off. So, I added it to my cart without even questioning it. In the end, I saved $23 and only paid $21. I’m a Prime member, too, so you better believe I got free shipping.

What I love about this kind of article on The Clip, if I do say so myself, is that it reminds me that no saving is too small to shout about. Cassidy and Aina’s small but consistent savings prove that any money saved is better than no money saved. They add up to make a big difference over time. 

As for Parvin and me, we had the fortune of saving 50% or more off a necessary purchase, in Parvin’s case, and a make-sense “want” purchase, in my case. 

At the end of the day, it highlights that if you always take an extra few seconds to check for deals, you’ll regularly save. And sometimes, you might get bigger savings than you might expect.
