Nike was founded in 1964 by University of Oregon track athlete Philip Knight. At the time, Nike was known as Blue Ribbon Sports, but produced no products of ther own. Instead, Blue Ribbon Sports was an intermediary distributor for Onitsuka Tiger – which is now known as ASICS.
Before the first Blue Ribbon Sports retail location opened in 1966, employees were selling inventory from the trunks of their cars at track meets and other events frequented by athletes. By 1971, Blue Ribbon Sports ended their partnership with Onitsuka Tiger and decided to launch their own product line. The company's name was changed to Nike – a name derived from the Greek goddess of victory.
Because Nike was short on employees and overhead at the time, Knight contacted a design student from his university to see if she could come up with a logo for the brand. Knight didn't like the design very much, but decided to keep it – and paid the student $35 for her efforts. The famous “Swoosh” logo made its first appearance that same year and was copyrighted by Nike in the US Patent Office in 1974. Nike continued to grow and evolve over the years to cater different types of athletes. Their marketing strategies were highly successful and facilitated the acquisition of smaller sporting good conglomerates under their brand.
Today, Nike is one of the world's largest suppliers of athletic shoes and sporting equipment with an annual revenue of $25 billion. Their headquarters is located in Beaverton, Oregon – just outside Portland. The company employees more than 44,000 people worldwide and regularly provides lucrative sponsorships to a wide range of athletes, sports teams and sporting venues. Nike has entered into some very lucrative sponsorships with many athletes across various genres of sports. Some of Nike's most recently awarded sponsorships are:
Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons, Josh Howard, Michael Crabtree, Dwight Freeney, LaMarr Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba, Derek Jeter, DJ Augustin, Michael Finley, Richard Hamilton and April Holmes.
Nike also uses fitness models in addition to professional athletes in their advertising campaigns. The process for becoming a fitness model for Nike is pretty much the same as becoming any other kind of model. You have to look the part, build a portfolio and sign on with a modeling agency to market you to prospective clients. You can skip the agency part by creating a website to showcase your modeling skills yourself, but you may miss out on casting calls that that non-agency members don't have access to. Of course, you can also check the “Careers” section of the Nike website to find out if they are hiring fitness models and what their application process is.
