How to avoid shipping fees at Macy’s
The best way to avoid shipping fees at Macy’s is to meet the free shipping threshold or pick in-store pickup.
Macy’s offers free shipping at $49 for most shoppers, but it’s not always cheaper to hit that minimum.
Paying for shipping is cheaper when your order is $30. Shipping costs $10.95, and that would make your new total $40.95. Adding a $19 item just to get free shipping won't truly save you money unless you really need that item. It makes sense to add a small item to get free shipping when your total is around $45. In this case, adding a small item costs about the same as the shipping fee.
Only add items to reach free shipping if the extra cost is close to the shipping fee or something you already planned to buy.
Use in-store pickup to skip shipping fees
In-store pickup is always free, with no minimum required.
This option is best if your order is under $49 and you don’t want to pay the $10.95 shipping fee.
Is Klarna worth using at Macy’s?
Klarna doesn’t lower your total, it splits your purchase into 4 payments over 6 weeks. You still pay the full price, just in smaller chunks over time. As long as you pay on time, there are no extra fees. Miss a payment, and you can get hit with late charges, which makes the purchase more expensive.
When to use Klarna:
You want to avoid credit card interest.
You can make all payments on time.

Macy's only lets you use one coupon per order, so pick the one that saves you the most. Add items to your cart, go to checkout, and enter your promo code in the box before placing the order.
Compare coupons by real savings
% off coupon: Apply these coupons on orders over $100. Example: 20% off a $150 order saves $30.
$ off coupon: Better for orders under $100. Example: $20 off a $75 order saves $20 (a % off would only save about $15).
Free shipping coupon: This is a good option for smaller discounts, but shipping costs would otherwise make the purchase more expensive. It saves you $9.99 in shipping fees.

Open and use the Macy’s card only if you shop there often enough to beat regular sale prices.
The best benefit is 30% off your first purchase, up to $100:

After that, the rewards are much smaller:
Silver members: Earn 2% back.
Gold members: Earn 3% back & get free shipping on all orders.

The card makes the most sense for the first-order discount or for frequent shoppers spending $500 or more a year at Macy's. Occasional shoppers will usually get more value from a 20% to 30% off promo code.
Best ways to save on your first order at Macy's
Use the Macy’s credit card if your goal is the biggest first-purchase discount. It gives 30% off, up to $100, which beats the 25% off email signup offer and the 25% off first app order discount. For example, a $100 order saves $30 with the card, compared with $25 through email or the app.
If you do not want to open a card, use the email or app offer instead. These first-purchase discounts are one-time offers, not stackable, so the best choice comes down to bigger savings or a no-card option.
Macy’s Star Rewards: Is it worth it?
Star Rewards gives you 1% back at the free Bronze level, which is barely worth chasing on its own. The member only pays off if you have the Macy's credit card and hit the Gold or Platinum tier.
What you actually earn
You need 1000 points to get $10 in Star Money (that's 1% back). Here's what each tier pays per $100 spent:
Bronze (free, no card): 1% back = $1
Silver (Macy's card default): 2% back = $2
Gold ($500+/year on card): 3% back + free shipping = $3
Platinum ($1,200+/year on card): 5% back = $5
Should you join?
Bronze membership is free and takes 2 minutes to set up. It is worth it when you shop at Macy's 3 or more times a year, and the rewards stack on top of sale prices.
Occasional shoppers visiting once or twice a year are better off waiting for Friends & Family (30% off) or Black Friday (up to 50% off).
As a frequent shopper, you may get more value from the credit card. Gold members earn 3% back and Platinum members earn 5% back, which can outpace coupons for regular shoppers.
Smart ways to save using Macy’s registries
Macy’s wedding and baby registries can be a helpful way to save if you plan or expect to buy items for yourself later.
For a wedding registry, you can get 10% to 20% off select remaining items after your wedding date. This lets you add items you know you will still need and then purchase them later at a discount instead of full price.
For a baby registry, Macy’s includes added support like a Celebration Consultant and a Baby Welcome Box. You also get a 10% discount on eligible leftover items after the registry period. This can be especially useful when you are slowly building out larger baby essentials over time.
These perks work best when you are intentional. Register for items you realistically plan to buy so the post-event discount actually leads to real savings.
When should I shop at Macy's?
The best sales to shop
Macy's runs sales throughout the year, but from what we've seen, two of the best times to shop are the Friends & Family Sale and Star Deals Week. Both offer deeper discounts than a typical promo code, and knowing when each one runs can help you time your purchase and save more. Here’s what they offer:
Friends & Family Sale: This sale runs about three to four times a year and saves you up to 30% without needing to open a new credit card account. A recent sale this year lasted from April 22 to May 3. Getting the Macy's card makes more sense when you need to buy now and plan to keep using it, but when both are available, the Friends & Family Sale is the simpler option.
Star Deals Week: Macy's biggest discounts of the year, covers categories like jewelry, activewear, and seasonal clothing. Discounts have reached up to 70% off, which is typically better than any promo code.
