Lyft's cancelation policy
Lyft allows for cancelations. However, this may result in a fee charged to your account. From what we've read on r/Lyft, these cancelation fees range from $1-$4. The exact amount will depend on where you are and how busy the time of day is. While we were not able to verify exactly when a fee will be charged, here are factors that can lead to the fee:
Canceling more than 30 seconds after your ride is accepted by a driver
Canceling more than 30 seconds after booking a Wait and Save ride
Canceling after the driver arrives at your location
Booking and canceling three or more rides within 15 minutes
If you feel you were wrongly charged a cancelation fee, you can dispute it through Lyft. Go to your account and select "Rider history". Choose the ride where a fee was charged, and select "Dispute rider charge".

How the Smart Ride program can benefit your university
Lyft's Smart Ride program is designed to help students get to class and safely navigate college life. Lyft has partnered with many universities around the US to bring this program to students, faculty, and staff. The exact benefits of each partnership will vary from school to school. Some examples that we've found include:
CU Boulder lab students get credits of up to $300 a month to travel between labs & campus locations.
ASU students got a $15 personal credit when creating a business account with their student email.
UChicago students were given 10 free rides per month for nights from Thursday to Sunday.
Check with your own university to see if they offer this program. Staff members interested in bringing this to their university can submit a form at the bottom of the Smart Ride program page.
Refer a friend for discounts
With Lyft's Rider Referral Program, share your personal link with friends, and you’ll both earn a discount. In June 2026, we checked our referral page in the app and had an offer where we'd receive 50% off one ride with a successful local referral. It was valid for 14 days after the referral took their first ride. The offer did not specify the discount for the person being referred.
The person you refer must live in the same country as you do for the referral to be valid. They must also be new to Lyft, with no prior account. What you get with Lyft Pink
Lyft Pink is a subscription service that has two different plans. The standard plan costs $9.99 a month, or $99 annually. The annual payment evens out to $8.25 per month, which would save you about 15% compared to the monthly payments. The Lyft Pink All Access plan has an annual cost of $199. With the standard Lyft Pink plan, you'll enjoy the following benefits:
Free Priority Pickup upgrades (saves you $3-$4 per ride)
5% off extra comfort and Lyft XL rides
Three free cancelations per month
12 free bike or scooter rides per year

When is Lyft Pink worth it?
Lyft Pink is best for people who use Lyft often. For anyone who goes weeks, months, or longer in between Lyft rides, the $9.99 or $8.25 per month will cancel out potential savings. Regular riders who like to opt for priority pickup will see more value. Let's say you take four rides per month and use the priority pickup upgrade each time. At $3-$4 off per ride, that's $12-16 saved monthly, more than the $9.99 subscription cost.
Lyft Pink All Access is even more specific. It's best for someone who prefers to opt for the Black ride options offered by Lyft. Or someone who uses Lyft to unlock bikes and scooters.
How to use a Lyft promo code
Step 1: View your account
To use a promo code on the Lyft app, start by opening up your account information. It's in the navigation bar at the bottom of the app.
Step 2: Go to Rewards
On the account menu, tap "Rewards". You'll find it under the "Programs" category.
Step 3: Enter promo code
On the rewards page, tap "Enter code +" to open up the box where you'll enter your promo code. We recommend copying and pasting it directly from our page so there's no issue with entering it correctly.
Step 4: Choose your ride as usual
Provided that your promo code is valid, it will be applied to your account. From there, the next time you choose your ride, it will be automatically discounted when you checkout. Note that promo codes with Lyft have time limits and restrictions, so always check the terms and conditions.
Save 11% with Wait and Save
Wait and Save is cheaper than booking a standard Lyft ride. You'll just have to wait longer than usual for your ride to reach you. We tested how much you'll actually save by comparing prices on two routes: one short route and one further away.
For the long route:
Standard pricing was $35.93 with an estimated 13-minute wait time
Wait and Save pricing was $31.93 with an estimated 14-25 minute wait time
For the short route:
Standard pricing was 16.96 with an estimated 13-minute wait time
Wait and Save pricing was $14.96 with an estimated 11-25 minute wait time
In both routes, the math works out to about 11% in savings when you choose Wait and Save. When we were testing our shorter route, Lyft actually gave us a 10% discount on the standard option, bringing the price down to $15.27. This was a 20-minute flash sale that applied to all ride options, except for Wait and Save. The caveat here is that this was a random promotion, and we cannot verify when or how it triggers.
Wait and Save is a worthwhile option when you're not in a rush and can trade a longer wait time for a few dollars off your total. If you're lucky enough to get a flash promotion, that's the best of both worlds. You get a discounted price and won't have to wait as long for your ride.
