How We Find and Verify Coupon Codes at Coupons.com

Our top priority is providing users with coupon codes we can guarantee will work for them. While our verification process is nothing new, we now have a clear way to show you the proof of our codes working for us, or for other users. This verification process is part of what makes us different from our competitors, and we want to explain how it works and why it makes our site more trustworthy.

Every coupon code marked Verified on Coupons.com has been used on a real cart at checkout and proven to work. We’re happy to share that now you can see that proof for yourself. It's not uncommon that we receive comments about code verification, and skepticism around the claim that most coupon aggregators display every code as verified on their sites. We asked ourselves, how can we make sure that you know we mean it when we proudly say, “We verify our codes manually on Coupons.com.” Our answer: Show you the proof in the form of real, unedited screenshots of the store’s checkout with our codes being tested. We’ll take it from the top and explain where our codes come from, exactly how we test them, and what our verification labels mean for you.

One of the core requirements of being part of the Coupons.com team is to be an avid deal-hunter in the e-commerce space ourselves. We believe that the best way to understand our users’ frustrations is to be a user ourselves. And as a user, nothing is more frustrating than finding a code, filling your cart, and watching it fail at checkout. That is why we chose a path that might be more time- and resource-consuming, but ultimately lets us show the absolute best content. When it comes to codes, we don't guess if they work, and we don't rely on automated scrapers that send you to expired offers. We prove that they work before anything is set live. But you’ve already heard this claim; we’ve been working this way for years, so what is different now?

What's new: Our coupon cards now show you the evidence behind each code. You can see on every code whether it was recently verified or not, when it was last tested, and — for many codes — a screenshot of the code working at checkout taken by our editors. Instead of asking you to trust a green checkmark, we show you why it's there.

Where our coupon codes come from

Our codes come from three sources, and every one of them passes through the same verification process before it earns a Verified label.

  • Our commercial teams and long-standing retailer relationships: Our dedicated commercial teams work directly with retailers and brands, many of them partners for as long as Coupons.com has been around. With our vast experience in the coupon market, we often get official promotions and exclusive codes before they appear anywhere else.

  • Affiliate partner networks: We also work with 1000+ retailers through established affiliate networks, giving us access to their official campaigns and promo codes.

  • Our editorial team: Our staff and freelance coupon editors actively scout for new offers and re-test existing codes every day.

No matter where a code comes from, the source alone never makes it Verified. To make it live and have the Verified tag, the code must pass and work in a real test at the store’s checkout.

What the Verified label means, and what you'll see on each code

A Verified label means we have concrete proof that the code recently worked in a real checkout test. We confirm codes in two ways: manual tests by our editors and live checkout signals from real shoppers. Both are explained below.

Our coupon cards now tell you the verification status of every code at a glance:

What you see

What it means

Verified + timestamp (e.g. "Verified 2 hours ago")

The code worked at checkout within the last 14 days, either for an editor or a real user. The timestamp shows the most recent successful check.

An editor tested the code and captured the discounted cart. Tap or click to see the screenshot with the coupon applied.

No verified tag visible on the coupon card

Although this code was verified at its date of publishing, it hasn’t been confirmed in the last 14 days. It may still work, but we can't promise it.

Code removed

An editor confirmed the code no longer works. We mark it as expired or take it down so you don't waste time on it.

We'd rather tell you a code is unverified than pretend we've checked it recently. That honesty is the point of the label.

How our editors test every code: the 3-step checkout test

Our coupon editors test codes by hand, directly on the retailer's own website, exactly the way you would shop. A code must pass all three steps before an editor can mark it Verified.

  1. Build a real cart. The editor visits the store and adds products that meet the offer's exact terms. They check for minimum order values, excluded brands, and category restrictions.

  2. Apply the code at checkout. The editor enters the code in the promo field, just like a shopper, and watches for error messages or hidden conditions.

  3. Confirm the savings. We only approve the code if the final price drops by the advertised amount.

The proof behind every manual test. When an editor completes the test, our system records the exact time, the editor who ran it, and (optionally) a screenshot of the discounted cart. This record cannot be edited or backdated. You’ll see in the details of the coupon card that a code was “Tested and verified by our editors” when we’ve manually confirmed its validity. With our new feature, many of these screenshots are now visible to you directly on the coupon card, so you can see the discount applied before you even visit the store.

How real shoppers confirm codes in real time

We also verify codes through real purchases. When shoppers use our free Coupons.com Browser Extension, it tests available codes at checkout to find the best savings. Each time a code successfully lowers the price of a real order, our system receives an instant signal that the code is live and working.

This means popular codes are re-confirmed by real shoppers many times throughout the day. We only record whether a code worked or not. We never collect your payment details or link a code test to your identity. So when you see a code Tested and verified by our editors, it's because we manually tested it. When you see a code marked Worked for shoppers at checkout, without a screenshot, it means that a user has successfully used this code recently.

The three rules behind every Verified label

Editor tests and shopper signals both feed into our verification system, which follows three strict rules:

  • Verification always expires after 14 days. A Verified label is never permanent. If a code isn't re-tested by an editor or successfully used by a shopper within 14 days, the label disappears automatically and the code loses its Verified label.

  • Broken codes are removed immediately. If a retailer ends a promotion early and an editor finds the code no longer works, we mark it expired and remove it from our site right away.

  • Verifications come with a real timestamp, not a generic checkmark. Wherever available, our coupon cards show exactly how recent the last successful check was, such as "Verified 2 hours ago" or "Verified yesterday."

Who verifies our codes, and how we stay independent

Our editorial team. Codes on Coupons.com are tested by a team of over 50 coupon editors with half a century of combined experience in retail, deals, and consumer shopping. Read more about the team checking, testing and verifying your coupons.

Our track record. Coupons.com has helped shoppers save since 1998, sourcing, verifying, and publishing over 10,000 vouchers every month.

How we make money. When you use a code or link on Coupons.com and make a purchase, we may earn a commission from the retailer. This never affects whether a code is marked Verified. A code is Verified only if it passes a test, and retailers cannot pay for a Verified label or for a code to stay listed after it stops working.

Report a problem. If a Verified code doesn't work for you, tell us by using the Chat feature on the bottom right corner of your screen or by contacting us through any channel listed on our About Us page. Every report is reviewed by a team member, and codes that fail re-testing are removed immediately.
