Hello reader, my name is Parvinsivam, but everyone calls me Parvin. I’ve been an editor at Coupons.com for the past three years, and I work from our office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So while every editor has their own rhythm, we all follow a core set of daily rituals. Here’s what a typical day looks like for me.

Step into Parvin's daily routine

After commuting to the office, I start my day with my daily dose of caffeine. Everyone here knows I cannot function without it. So, my first stop is always the coffee machine.

Then it’s time to start work! All Coupons.com editors have a portfolio of retailer pages assigned to them. Our goal is to make sure these pages have the most up-to-date information so that you have the best savings to hand, all the time. To do that, we each have a set of daily tasks that guide us. We can work within this process however best suits us, but it keeps all of us editors on the same page. Here’s how I personally tackle this process and some of my non-work rituals that punctuate the day.

Checking emails and checking in with KAMs

I’d be willing to bet that I start my day much like you do: Going through my inbox. I’m on the lookout for any new offers that could be worth your time. When I find them, they get added to my own list of vouchers to verify and test that day.

One way that I find deals to add to this list is through retailer newsletters. I actually subscribe to every newsletter offered by retailers that are in my portfolio, and these are some of my favorite emails to work through. And while this may seem like a common-sense tactic, subscribing to newsletters is a mainstay in the life of a Coupons.com editor. That’s because it leads my fellow editors and me to some of the best, authentic deals we can bring you. After all, my job is to do the hard work for you so that you don’t have to sift through your own inbox for savings.

After I’ve cleared my inbox, I check in with our team’s Key Account Managers (we call them KAMs for short). KAMs work tirelessly to negotiate and obtain exclusive codes for retailers. What’s so important about these exclusive codes? Well, they always benefit you, the shopper, most. Whether it’s bigger discounts or better deals, what I’m able to bring you via the KAMs is a win for you and your wallet.

So, the next time you spot a discount on our pages that are marked as “exclusive,” you know there’s most likely a KAM behind the scenes to thank for it. And don’t worry, I’ve thanked them for you and me, both!

Publishing deals just for you

Once I’ve gathered any and all possible deals from my inbox, KAMs, and those on our team who are searching for new savings at all hours of the day, I ensure that everything has been verified.

As editors, it’s our responsibility to review each possible savings and make sure it meets our quality checks. If an offer has expired or I find out that it’s not working correctly, it goes straight to the trash. Those that pass my (and my team’s!) tests get the privilege of getting published on Coupons.com ASAP.

Team meets and crucial lunchtime decisions

If it’s a Tuesday, I usually finish publishing new deals right before our weekly team meeting kicks off. During these meetings, our team lead, Mia, updates us on new projects, upcoming team events, and the company’s overall performance. It’s also a chance for us to bring up any concerns or challenges we might be facing and discuss them as a team.

While it’s important for your usual business-related reasons, I like this meeting because it gives me the chance to hear what my fellow Coupons.com editors are working on. I’ve got pages in my work notebook full of thoughts and ideas that come from this part of the day. This meeting always ends right around lunchtime, so with fresh ideas percolating in my mind, it’s time to eat!

Lunch can sometimes feel like an event when we’re in the office. Sometimes, it's pretty basic, but other days it's a full-on production because there are so many food options around, and we’re a very indecisive group of people. Sometimes we even play spin-the-wheel to help us decide where to eat. Nine out of 10 times, we land on Makan Place or MP, as we call it. It’s a budget food court located in the shopping mall next to our office. It's a crowd pleaser, so everyone in the office gets exactly what they want.

Into the afternoon with page refreshing

When my lunch break ends, it means we’ve arrived at the point in my day when I completely lock in on getting my portfolio of Coupons.com pages in the best shape of their lives (that is, the best shape of their lives since I did the same thing with them yesterday…).

The nature of my role means I’m constantly looking at my pages for a variety of reasons. But I like to have a dedicated portion of my day when I get my eyes on exactly what you’re seeing. If I haven’t already uploaded new deals, this is when I publish the newest discounts my team and I have sourced. I also revisit the savings tips I’ve included on each of my pages in case something needs my attention.

Daily maintenance like this means that at any given moment, they’re in the best condition they can be. And why does that matter? Because when you search for a discount code or an easy way to save money, we want Coupons.com to be ready and waiting for you with the savings you need.

The daily wind-down

Of course, no workday would be complete without an unofficial tea break at about 4 PM with my teammates, Danny and Valen. Our office pantry is stocked weekly with new snacks and canned drinks, so it’s very common to see us walking back and forth between our desks and the pantry, and returning with our hands full. I always go for an iced can of Milo and a packet of Oat Krunch cookies.

Armed with an afternoon pick-me-up, I usually wrap up my day with a final set of checks. Then, much like my day started, I recheck my emails one last time. After that, I head off to the station to catch my train, so I can get home in time for family dinner.

And that’s a typical day in my life as an editor: A mix of caffeine, uploading new vouchers, a lot of teamwork, and the occasional snack break.

The Clip is where the people behind Coupons.com get to speak plainly. No press releases. No corporate polish. Just honest stories from people who think hard every day about helping you spend less and keep more.
