Safeway for U is the loyalty program that ties every other savings tool together. Signing up is free, and there is no real downside to joining. Plus, most "sale" prices at Safeway are member prices. If you skip the program, you might have to pay more at the register for the same cart.
Benefits of joining this program
Joining is free and takes only a few minutes. Most new members get a welcome offer to start, usually $5 off a $25 purchase. Add your birth month and day to your account, and you will also get a treat around your birthday.
After that, the savings keep coming each week. You get personalized deals based on what you buy, along with digital promo codes you cannot find anywhere else. The homepage claims the program can save you up to $25 a week. That figure fits a heavy shopper on a big week, so think of it as a ceiling rather than a promise.
Every month, you also get an offer for one free item worth up to $10. You just add it to your account before it expires, then redeem it in store or on an online order. Your first free item shows up the month after you sign up. The offer expires each month and does not roll over, so set a reminder at the beginning of each month.
Members can also link the health tracking tool inside the app to earn a little more. Signing up can unlock $10 off groceries, and connecting a step tracker can add a $5 off promo code on top. From there, you earn 50 points a day any time you hit 8000 steps or more. Keep in mind that you can only connect one tracker, and the sign-up bonus is a one-time deal. Earning and spending points
You earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on groceries. Gift cards earn 2 points per $1, and qualifying pharmacy purchases earn 1 point per $1. However, some items won't earn you points, including alcohol, tobacco, fuel, and in some states, fluid dairy. Points expire within two calendar months, counting from the month you earn them. The exception is FreshPass members, whose points do not expire.
Once points add up, you have three ways to cash them in:
Grocery rewards: 300 points take $4 off, 1000 points take $15 off, and 1200 points take $20 off at checkout.
Gas rewards: 100 points equal to 10 cents off per gallon, for up to $1.00 off per gallon at participating stations.
Automatic cash off: Opt in for this feature, and every 100 points will be turned into $1 off your next order.
If you fill up often, gas is the smartest way to spend, since it pushes your points close to a penny and a half each. If you would rather save at the register, hold out for the 1200-point tier for $20 off, which beats cashing out sooner. Automatic cash-off is the easy button, but it also gives back the least. So save it for points you might otherwise let expire.
How to apply a Safeway coupon
They are digital, and you will have to clip them first to use them. Here is how to do it:

Set your correct store location so the right prices and offers load.
Open the Deals or Coupons section and browse the offers.
Tap "clip" on each coupon you want.

In-store, enter your registered phone number or scan your member QR code at the register. Online, the coupon will apply to your linked account automatically.
The clip-then-scan system works great, but it is not foolproof. New accounts can take about 15 minutes to activate before coupons work, so sign up before you head to the store. Many Safeway coupons are one-time use and have expiration dates. And check your receipt before you leave. Shoppers regularly report clipped coupons not being properly credited at the register. If a discount is missing, show your receipt to customer service to have it corrected.
