Travel Apps That Will Save You Time This Holiday Season

Tis the season to travel with our families. Whether it be to grandma’s house or across the country for the first time in years, we enjoy packing up and celebrating the holiday season with those we love. But when we hit a glitch, like a record snow storm or the inability to find a gas station, holiday travel becomes stressful. Luckily, travelers these days have smartphones. Apps loaded to those smartphones can help us navigate, plan and adjust easier than ever! Here are five travel apps for the holiday season that will save you time and heartache.

Weather Underground

Knowing the weather where you are going and all along the way is so important. No one wants to be stranded in a major show storm that they did not see coming on Christmas Eve!  Weather Underground is a Free app that experts swear on. This app uses data uploaded by real people in areas to compile the weather situation. It complies that data and tells you what people on the ground are saying this are like. As we all know, real accounts are so important when deciding when to travel.

Gas Buddy

If you are driving somewhere you are not familiar with, finding gas can be a concern. There are many times I have been searching on empty thinking there had to be one close by. Gas Buddy not only shows you where gas stations are but also directs you to the cheapest gas in the area!

Driving to grandma’s for the holidays is great until the kids get hungry and you are out of snacks and cup treats. Then it’s time to find a place to stop and eat, but you’re not too familiar with the area and don’t know the best place to go to feed the entire family. GrubHub allows you to enter everything from location to cuisine to price to find the perfect spot in their 28,000+ listings.

Gate Guru

It also lets you know the food choices and restaurants on the way to your gate.

We live in a world where a smartphone never leaves our side. But sometimes when you travel, you might find yourself searching for a signal. If you can’t get WiFi from your carrier, then try downloading NinthDecimel’s WiFi Finder app. This app will automatically hook you up when you can’t get WiFI any other way by giving you access to hot spots around the world!

I usually try to park near a marker at the airport. I then take a photo and hope that I can place that photo when I get back. With the guess is gone. It can track and keep up to five cars and where they are parked. In addition, if you have metered parking, it can time the meter for you! No more running around with kids in a stroller trying to find Green D 36 level 9. This app is available for on iTunes and the Google Play store.

With so many of us living our lives with technology, travel apps are a dime a dozen. But I like these because they work, they offer more than most and they work time after time! What travel apps will you rely on this holiday season?

I would also add Spyglass into this list. Using augmented reality, the app overlays compass, GPS and location info on top of visuals captured by an iPhone camera or the map itself. It can measure distance, sizes of objects, your speed, altitude and potential arrival time to the target. You can use it as a waypoints tool, sextant, compass, rangefinder, speedometer, inclinometer and more.
