Big Discounts for the 50-plus Crowd

Having another birthday may actually save you money. Some “senior” discounts kick in as early as age 50, which may seem too young to be called “senior.” But hey, you might as well take advantage.

Here are some restaurants, retail stores, and travel opportunities that will reward you for your life experience.

Department Store Deals:

Where: Kohl’s
When: Every Wednesday
What: 15% Discount
Who: 60+

Bonus Tip: This offer is available in stores only, but online shoppers of all ages can benefit from Kohl’s coupon policy. You can use two promo codes per order as long as they are not both percentage-off coupons. That means you can combine free shipping with a percentage off. You can also use up to four Kohl’s Cash (dollar off coupons) per order.

If you’re 55 and over, you can save 10% at Ross on Tuesdays. Ages 50 and over can join Club 50 Plus and save 20% every Tuesday at Stage Stores, which include Bealls, Goody’s, Palais Royal, Peebles, and Stage.

Transportation Perks:

Where: Amtrak
When: Anytime
What: 15% Discount
Who: 62+
A train may not be the quickest way to get to your destination, but it’s just the ticket if you’re looking for a scenic, budget-friendly ride. Kids, ages 2 through 15 ride half-price every day, so you can bring the grandkids.

Greyhound offers a 5% discount for the 62 and over crowd. Some airlines give senior discounts, generally for ages 65 and over. The catch is you can usually find web-only deals that are even better. So go online and find out how much fares are, then call the airline and ask about a senior discount to make sure you truly get the best deal.

Scenic Savings:

Where: National Parks
When: Anytime
What: $10 Lifetime Pass
Who: 62+
Pay just $10 for a lifetime pass to over 2,000 National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands. In addition to free entrance, the pass will give you discounts to other amenities like boat launching and guided tours. Another perk, often entrance fees are charged per car, so your whole family can get in free when you show your pass.

Eats on the Cheap:

Where: Elephant Bar
When: Anytime
What: 20% off
Who: 60+
At the Elephant Bar, seniors aren’t delegated to a special area of the menu to get discounts. They can choose any item, any time of the day and get 20% off – one of the highest senior discounts we found.

Senior discounts vary by location but sometimes, ask and you shall receive. Applebee’s, Chili’s, Denny’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, IHOP, and TCBY are a few eateries where you may receive a deal.

Final Word:  If you have an AARP membership, there a lot more savings to cash in on, especially if you are a frequent traveler. Many hotels, car rental agencies and cruise lines offer big savings to members, up to 25% off. However, even without a membership, there are plenty of savings to be had and all you need is an ID.
