At-Home Hair Color Without the Hassle? My Madison Reed Review

Spring is almost here, and it’s time to make a few changes! Those deep, vampy lip colors will be put away for pinker shades. Your winter moisturizer will be set aside for something lighter in texture to accommodate the change in temperature, and your winter coat will be replaced with a windbreaker. Now that you got all that out of the way, it’s time to refresh your hair color too!

Per Modern Salon, 52 percent of women that colored their hair in the last 12 months colored it in the comfort of their own home. Seventy-five percent of those women believe salon color is too expensive.

Sound familiar? Coloring at home, however, comes with some risk. A European Commission report noted that most box hair dyes contain chemicals like paraphenylenediamine (PPD), ammonia, DMDM hydantoin, and resorcinol that cause side effects that range from allergies to arthritis, not to mention skin, throat, lung, and eye irritation.

Madison Reed, established in 2014, addresses the middle ground between toxic box hair color and expensive appointments with a stylist.

For just $25 you can order a box of salon-quality hair dye that’s free of ammonia, resorcinol, PPD, and other harmful chemicals and have it delivered to your home. I’m a lucky gal because, thanks to Madison Reed, I got the chance to try their at-home hair color system and share all the details with you!

The first step is to find your hair color. You take a very short and simple questionnaire to get four color options. Then you can choose from ordering just one box for $24.95, or establish a membership to have color shipped up to every eight weeks for $19.95 a box. Membership comes with other perks, like free samples in every box of hair color and a birthday kit.

The color selection process was very simple. I even had the option to chat with a colorist if I needed additional help choosing a color. Long or thick hair? No worries. You can order extra color for $10.

What Came in My Madison Reed Box

Shipping was fast and when everything arrived at my door, safe and sound, it was time to apply the color I selected, Firenze Brown.

The kit that arrives contains everything you need to color your hair — barrier cream, a cleansing wipe, color, developer, two pairs of gloves, a processing cap, shampoo, and conditioner.

Using Madison Reed At-Home Hair Color

The application process was very simple: mix, apply, and rinse!

The hair color itself was odor-free and didn’t drip. The shampoo had a lovely scent of lavender and cleaned my hair without drying it out. The conditioner was also lavender-scented and delivered some much-needed hydration to my hair. Plus, I have no scalp irritation, which is something I regularly experience with box hair color from the drugstore.

Is Madison Reed the Best At-Home Hair Color?

My hair is now a beautiful shade of mahogany brown with red undertones, and yes, my gray hairs are completely covered. I only had a few around my hairline, but after using the Madison Reed home hair color they’re no longer there.
