Keep your makeup vanity organized, too, with these 8 organizing tips!

Organize your closet

Before you can give yourself a wardrobe makeover, you must first give your closet one. A lot of times having a disorganized and cluttered closet can be so uninspiring. Organization makes it easy for you to get ready and pick out the outfit that makes you feel and look your best! Here are three quick tips how to get your closet ready for your budget wardrobe makeover.

Step 1: Categorize

The easiest way to find the clothing items you need is to categorize them, if you haven’t yet. Not all of us have the luxury of huge walk-in closets where you can hang all your pretty dresses and nice blouses and neatly fold your cotton shirts. However, there are a lot of organizers and containers that you can use which you can find at stores like Walmart, Amazon, Marshalls, HomeGoods, or TJ Maxx. Be creative and resourceful. Pick the ones that will best fit your closet real estate

You don’t have to invest in a costly closet organizer system to create a clutter-free closet. Check out these affordable closet organization solutions!

With all the fashion jewelry I’ve accumulated throughout the years, I’ve just recently organized each piece by putting each item in plastic bags and white storage containers. My life hasn’t been the same since I’ve done this and I wish I had done it sooner! It saves me a lot of time in finding which earrings or necklace will work well with my outfit.

Step 2: Color code

Have you ever walked in to a clothing store and noticed that the items are arranged according to colors? This makes it easy for me because I can just walk into an area of the store and see what color of shirt, dress, skirt, or pants I feel like buying.

You can do the same thing with your closet. Arrange your closet colors after you’ve categorized it. You can also arrange it based the length. For example, put all your short black items together and your long black items together. This will work even if you don’t have a walk-in closet or don’t have a big one.

Step 3: Take inventory

A friend of mine has recently gone on a living a “minimal” life journey. She’s gotten rid of a lot of items in her closet and pretty much left herself with things she often wears and perhaps some she’ll wear on special occasions.

She introduced me to an app called Closet (a free app currently only available for Apple products). She uses the app to take a photo of the outfits in her closet and documents the outfit she wears on a particular day. The app has a calendar function where she can “date” the outfit so she knows when she last wore it. This may be a lot of work at first, but it may be worth it in the long run. You can use the app to find outfits you haven’t worn in a year, which can be donated. This will free up some space and allow room for something new!

How to build a wardrobe on a budget

Now that we’ve organized your closet, let’s do your wardrobe makeover with these simple steps.

Step 1: Get rid of the old, try something new

We’re creatures of habit and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as we create good habits. I find that most women tend to stick with same colors. Well, if your closet is full of the same colors, it’s time to get some new ones. Did you know that your choice of color reflects your personality and affects your mood throughout the day?

You don’t have to do this all at once. If you’re not used to wearing bright colors, slowly but surely do it. You can ease yourself into it by incorporating an item in a slightly-toned-down, new color into your outfit. For example, wear a burgundy button-down shirt under a blazer for work, instead of your usual grey or white blouse. You can also pick a subtle print with some bright colors in it.

You don’t have to spend a ton in doing this. Being a smart shopper is highly recommended! Target, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Kohl’s are some of the stores to go for budget shopping. Of course, don’t forget to bring some coupons with you from while you’re at it.

Step 2: Start to feel confident

This is related to step number one above. You can’t expect to feel confident or feel any different if you’re doing the same thing and wearing the same styles and colors.
If you’re mostly a jeans and T-shirt kind of gal, try wearing a dress sometimes — even to just go out at the mall. And if you’re mostly a dress person, try wearing some jeans or dress pants. You’ll never know what will make you feel confident and at your best if you don’t change up your style every now and then.

Wearing quality underwear and bras underneath your clothes will also do the trick! Get rid of your old items and pick up some styles that will enhance your feminine assets without being seductive. Your goal is to feel sexy within.

Be sure to pick a bra that fits your body. Specialty stores like Victoria’s Secret typically offer fitting services that will help you find your correct cup and band size.

Step 3: Get inspired

It’s hard to prettify ourselves and get the confidence that we need when we don’t know where to start or what exactly to do. If I have no idea of what to wear, I find something to inspire me. Colors usually do it for me. I think of what color I want to wear and go from there.

If you have no idea where to get started, get inspiration from YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, and fashion blogs. With just a few strokes on your keyboard, the inspiration will come.

The key to your wardrobe makeover is to experiment here and there. See what works for you — you don’t have to spend money to try clothes on. Trial and error will eventually help you find what you’re looking for. It may take a bit of time but don’t let that hold you back.
