All-New Slow Cooker Recipe: French Onion French Dips

slow-cooker-french-dip-05Yeah, yeah. You know you can use that crockpot to make a Sunday Roast. And maybe you heat up chili or meatballs for parties or potlucks. But, who wants to just keep making the same-old stuff? It’s time to shake up the routine a bit and add some slow cooker shazam! to your dinnertime routine with French Dip.

This delicious recipe takes two things your family already loves—the rich savory goodness of cheesy French Onion soup, and the craveable comfort of French Dip sandwiches. Then puts them together to create an all new meal, slow cooked until tender in your crockpot. The recipe makes it’s own au jus, so it’s simple as can be, and wildly delicious. Perfect for serving on busy weeknights, lazy weekends, and every other eating event in between!

3 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon fresh-ground pepper
1 (2-3 pound) roast
1 large onion, sliced thin
1 packet au jus powdered mix
1 (10.5 ounce) can French Onion soup
12 small dinner rolls
1 ½ cup gruyere or baby swiss cheese, shredded

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter until sizzling. Salt and pepper the top and bottom of the roast. Brown the top and bottom of the roast in the hot skillet.

Place onion, au jus, French Onion soup, and 1 cup water in the bottom of a 4-5 quart slow cooker. Place roast on top. Cover slow cooker and turn to low, cooking roast for 5-7 hours, until tender.

Remove roast, use a fork to shred the meat. Slice the dinner rolls sandwich-style. Place the shredded meat inside each roll. Use a slotted spoon to remove onions from the slow cooker and place the onions on top of the meat on each roll. Top with shredded cheese. Place sandwiches open-faced on a baking sheet.

Preheat oven to broil, and place rack on the top shelf of the oven. Broil sandwiches on top rack for 1-2 minutes, or just until the cheese turns bubbly and golden brown.

Top each sandwich with the top part of the roll. Serve with au jus from the slow cooker for dipping. Enjoy your French Dip!
