About Harry and David
The seed for the Harry and David consumers know today, was planted in 1910 when Samuel Rosenberg traded his hotel property for 240 acres of prime orchard land in Oregon's Rogue Valley. Rosenberg's sons – Harry and David, who were both majors in agriculture – decided to focus their efforts on growing a specific type of pear, which they would market to high end restaurants and hotels in Europe.
After the Great Depression, Harry and David changed their target market and set their sights on California buyers. That venture was just as successful and in 1934, Harry and David became an official mail order company known as Bear Creek Orchards. The brothers advertised their company in printed media throughout the 1930 in some of the best known and widely circulated publications of the time – including Fortune, National Geographic and Time.
The brothers officially changed the name of their company to Harry and David in 1946 and remained under the control of the Rosenberg family until 1984, at which time it was purchased by RJR Nabisco. Harry and David was bought and sold many times over by various investment firms and became the sister company of Wolferman's and Cushmans, two brands that are still sold by Harry and David. Today, Harry and David is a wholly owned subsidiary of 1-800-Flowers.com and has an employee base of 8,000 – most of which are seasonal workers during the fall and winter months. If you're curious as to where Harry and David pears are grown, their pears are still harvested from the original company owned orchards in Oregon's Rogue Valley.
