I like May for a lot of reasons but mainly because it’s warming up outside and vacations are on the horizon! I tend to start thinking about the outdoors and less about warm blankets and fireplaces. It’s lighter longer and for some reason that alone gives me more energy. I also like to take advantage of the best buys that come along in May.
You may be able to find these items on sale other times throughout the year, but if you want the best deal, well, now’s the time! Here are the eight best things to buy in May.
Once you’ve studied up on the best buys for May, why not check out our year-long best things to buy guide! Bookmark it and save it for later so you’ll always be in the know about when to buy and when to wait!
A good night’s sleep: Priceless! A good mattress: Pricey! But the month of May is when you can actually get great deals on a mattress, especially around Memorial Day weekend.
And don’t automatically purchase the box spring paired with a mattress in the store. A high-end mattress on a lower-priced box spring will probably work just fine. Most people also don’t realize they can negotiate the posted prices. Many mattress stores will sell floor models or returns (always sanitized) at a deep discount.
2. Grills & BBQ Supplies
Now is the time to buy that grill! In addition to savings, some stores offer things like taking away your old grill or free assembly. In preparation for Memorial Day, expect coupons and store sales on condiments, soda, charcoal, and other BBQ essentials.
3. Paper products
I’m one for only buying paper towels, napkins, and toilet paper when they’re on sale. Period! Since they’re items that regularly go on sale and usually have coupons it’s easy to save. Recently I saved $35 by simply waiting until the towels were on sale and using coupons!
And don’t forget the rain check! My favorite toilet paper was on sale for $5 but they were out of stock. I asked for a rain check so when the item was back in stock, they would give me that great sale price.
4. Workout apparel
As we approach the warmer weather, manufacturers will begin clearing out the heavier workout clothes making room for lighter designs. Now’s the time to stock up, and save the receipts too!
If your purchase goes down in price after you buy it, many stores will give you a price adjustment, which means you get the difference of what you paid and the sale price back!
Have a favorite workout brand? Keep an eye out for brand-specific coupon codes, like Nike, Fila, Adidas, Under Armour, and more — and don’t forget to check for coupons from major outlets like Sports Authority, Big 5 Sporting Goods, and Finish Line!
5. Makeover magic
When the sun starts to shine, many of us feel invigorated to reinvent ourselves, or at the very least, polish up our look a bit. Check for personal care coupons at Coupons.com on things like hair dye and whitening strips.
6. Spa savings
In honor of Mother’s Day, many spas will be offering discounts and package deals. Also, busier spas will may offer better prices during the slower times of the day.
If you’re on a tight budget I have two words for you: Massage schools! You can find amazing deals like 60-minute massages for $30. They’re preformed by students who are about to graduate and need the hours working on real people. It’s a win-win for both of you.
