Take a sandwich staple and slather it on your face? Why not!
In an era of face creams that cost double my monthly grocery budget and pedicures involving piranhas, I’m feeling compelled more than ever to embrace the simple, uncomplicated, appointment and waiver-free beauty routines of yesteryear. Take for instance, this good old-fashioned mayo masque. This retro treatment is so quick and easy, the only ingredient required is—you guessed it—mayonnaise!
Here’s how to do it: Grab a jar of full-fat mayo from your pantry or fridge. Pop the top and apply a generous layer to cleansed skin—about 1/4-cup is all you’ll need. Sit back and relax for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your face clean with lukewarm water, rubbing skin in a circular motion with your fingertips or washcloth. Use cool water for one final rinse and pat your newly moisturized complexion dry with a towel.
Why it works: The oil and eggs in the mayo are proven moisturizers, and the vinegar has a stimulating effect, which can help dead skin cells turnover.
Tips: If the thought of having your face smell like egg salad grosses you out, feel free to mix in a few drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender is my go-to) to mask the smell. To bump up the moisturizing effect and hide the smell, stir two tablespoons of mayo in with one teaspoon baby oil. Your face will feel baby-bottom soft and oh-so supple. As with any face masque, use caution when applying, being careful to avoid your eyes.
