With the overwhelming effects of Hurricane Harvey, comes overwhelming need. Everything from clean water to shelter, food to medications is lost and has to be replaced. Below is a list of organizations doing the work needed to help the victims and how you can make a donation to help.

The greatest of human generosity can be seen during these times, but unfortunately so are scammers who take advantage of others’ generosity. Please be sure you protect yourself from scammers posing as an organization that will take your money to help others when in fact all they do is take your money. General Relief Funds

The gold standard in immediate emergency relief is the American Red Cross. It is on the ground 24\7 helping victims. You can make a donation through the website or to donate $10 simply text HARVEY to 90999.

Catholic Charities is providing aid in all areas of need including shelter, food, and a variety of services to people of all religions.

Matthew 25: Ministries has been providing kits with cleaning products, personal care items, first aid and baby. It is also providing tarps for shelter among other emergency supplies.

You can make a donation to the Salvation Army through its website or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. If you would like to text your donations, just text the word STORM to 51555.

To meet the immediate needs of victims, Global Giving has set up the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Funds raised will help local organization with food, clean water, shelter and other daily necessities.

Aid for Children

Save the Children has begun bringing a range of baby supplies to shelters. In addition to providing all the items to meet a babies and child’s needs, Save the Children is also putting together kid friendly areas within local shelters.

San Antonio’s Texas Diaper Bank is in great need of diapers as well as wipes. People can mail or bring by supplies to 5415 Bandera Road, Suite 504, San Antonio, Tex., 78238


Donations of food and bottled water can be delivered to the Houston Food Bank and also the  Food Bank of Corpus Christi.


To donate much needed blood and tissue, contact the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Hours for donations have been extended in their San Antonio locations. To make a donatation you can do so directly on their website or call 210-731-5590.

Carter BloodCare takes care of hospitals throughout Texas. You can contact them at 877-571-1000. Other places that are assisting in blood donations are AABB. You can reach them at 301-907-6977.  The American Red Cross is taking blood donations throughout the country. You can reach them at 1-800-RED CROSS. You may also donate through the Armed Services Blood Program.

To help in the distribution of medical supplies and medication, you can donate to Direct Relief. This organization has made their entire 100-million-dollar inventory accessible to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Many animals have been injured and displaced due to Hurricane Harvey. You can help animals by going to the San Antonio Humane Society or the Houston Humane Society. The Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  helps in emergency situations. You can go to their website to make a donation.


It can be difficult to watch the devastation from afar and feel helpless. One way to help is to have a local drive for supplies or an event to raise money. Then you can send those donations to charities to help support the work they are doing.

The Red Cross has a page dedicated to people who want to volunteer. Find out how you can help by visiting their site. Additionally, you can type in your zip code and find a local blood drive.

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters has a form for those who would like to volunteer. You can fill it out and they will contact you as needed.
