As a busy mom of three young children, I’m always pressed for time when it comes to cooking dinner.
In an effort to make meal preparation easier, I ordered a Hello Fresh box to see if it was a enjoyable dinner option for my family.
Here’s my Hello Fresh review and detailed account of the good, the (not so) bad, and the tasty!
I also gave Blue Apron a trial run. See how they compare in my Blue Apron review!
But first, grab a discount!
I got a coupon code available for up to $50 off and you can too if you order two boxes. (Exp. 8/31) There’s even a referral program where your friends get $40 off their first order and you get $20 off your next box. (Exp. 8/31) Pretty sweet deal!
The Ordering Process
The website is a cinch to use, both for initial signup and for managing an ongoing subscription.
The recipes are all posted on the website with full-color pictures, which gives you everything you need to know about your order in terms of prep time, difficulty level, and dietary considerations.

Shipping is always free!
There’s a minimum of a five-day turnaround from the date you place your order, so plan ahead for special occasions.
I chose from six diverse menu items for my three-meal box. The meals were primarily focused around chicken and beef. There was also one seafood (fresh salmon, in my case) and one vegetarian option.

Special Diet Options
You can order a vegetarian meal box where all the meal choices are meat-free. For other dietary considerations, you’ll need to read the recipes before you order to make sure they fit your requirements.
All of the recipes are clearly marked as gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. to make it easy to spot the meals that will work for you. They also offer a family-friendly box, but at this time you don’t have a choice of meals on the family plan, they just ship what’s available that week.
Ingredients & Packaging
What Came in My Hello Fresh Order
I ordered the classic box, which is the most popular option and is priced from $9.90 per meal. You can order meals for two to four people, and there’s a minimum of three meals per week.
A large box was delivered to my doorstep right on time. Each meal conveniently had its own individual ingredient cartons inside the shipping container.
Each meal carton comes with everything you’ll need to make each dish.
Choosing a meal out of the shipping container was a snap, and the proteins were kept fresh on ice at the bottom of the box. Just make sure to clear some space in the fridge before your delivery arrives, the meal cartons are packed with food and take up a fair amount of space!
A variety of proteins arrive, packed on ice and ready to cook.
The ingredient quality was inconsistent; some items were great but some were not as good as what I would purchase at my local grocery store.
Some of the produce may have shifted too close to the ice packs during shipping. All ingredients come whole and unwashed, which means it’s up to you to do all of the cleaning and chopping.
The ingredients come pre-portioned and ready to clean and chop.
Recipe Difficulty & Taste
How Easy Was it to Make My Hello Fresh Meals?
Each box comes with a recipe booklet with very clear and concise step-by-step instructions along with photo illustrations. The meals were quite easy to put together, although some of the medium difficulty meals generated a lot of dirty dishes.
How It Tasted
The food tasted great! The recipes really worked and I appreciated that many of the flavor combinations were more adventurous than I would normally think to prepare. Portions were very generous.

The Family’s Reaction
The adults loved the food, and the children who are pickier eaters ate the plainer components of each meal. The gyro skewers were an all-around hit!
Would I Order Again?
This service is a time saver in that you have everything right at your fingertips to create a gourmet meal.
In addition, I really appreciate the emphasis on healthy and fresh meals. All of my meals were heavily based on lean proteins, produce and whole grains without sugar or processed ingredients.
However, I found that it actually took me a little longer to make some of these meals than a typical, simple healthy dinner at my house. Hello Fresh seems geared toward helping people learn to cook and expanding horizons.
This service would most definitely be beneficial to a novice chef, but some of the preparations could be simpler. For example, one dish called for potatoes to be boiled, then mashed by hand, then pan fried.
You may choose to simplify some preparations as you like. Personally, I like what Hello Fresh is trying to do; however, I would likely only use Hello Fresh when I’m short on time to shop.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hello Fresh for people with a desire to learn to cook healthy food. It’s a far superior option to ordering take out and any service that inspires healthy eating is a plus in my book!
