It’s tough being a grownup. There are so many responsibilities, requirements, and expectations we need to meet it can be overwhelming. That thing we call “adulting” must be done, though, in spite of it being ridiculously easy to screw up. (We’re looking at you, people who play Jenga with the trash rather than take it out!)
But sometimes taking matters into your own hands isn’t always easy (or advisable). Avoid applying your newly earned or veteran adulting degree to these tasks — they often come with dire consequences because things can go from good to bad very, very quickly…
1. DIY projects for the uncoordinated
Floor installation and drywall repair may seem easy if you just watch a YouTube video beforehand, but it’s not always worth it to try to save money this way.
From incidents involving saws and limbs to falls from great heights, things can go south really fast. For example, this guy who accidentally put two nails through his knee:
2. Car repairs
Okay, cars are complicated machines. Some people understand them, others don’t. If you fall into the “don’t” category… just don’t.
3. WebMD in place of a primary care physician
Mysteries are really fun to solve, but relying on medical websites is a terrible idea. On one hand, you may just need to switch lotions. On the other hand, you may have flesh-eating bacteria.
Let the medical professionals do their jobs and save yourself the anxiety of self-diagnosis!
4. Operate heavy machinery
Just because you have access doesn’t make it a good idea.
5. DIY haircuts
Haircuts are a rollercoaster of emotion. Too short? Not short enough? Try a little uneven and slightly lopsided. Don’t decide at 2 a.m. that you need bangs and you’re the perfect person to do it.
Yeah, hair grows back, but do you want to be reminded of your bad choices each time you look in a mirror?
6. Fancy exercise classes
Know your limits, people. Know your limits.
7. Cooking food
This (seemingly) basic skill just isn’t for everyone. If you’re prone to accidents in the kitchen, find a friend (or a parent) to teach you some basics! Don’t be this guy:
…But your taxes are a piece of cake!
If you’re full of nope when it comes to doing your own taxes…
