Brighten Up Your Backyard With This DIY Birdhouse Craft for Kids

One of my favorite spring finds at the craft store is wooden birdhouses. There’s always a huge selection, they’re cute as can be, and they’re very inexpensive. Did I also mention there are many options for decorating them?

All this makes DIY birdhouses one of my favorite spring crafts for kids. Children can let their creativity run wild and adults will love participating, too. Plus, it’s fun to watch neighborhood birds move in and raise families in your bright and colorful birdhouse craft!

Ready to team up with your kids to brighten up your backyard? All you have to do is grab several wooden birdhouses, some pretty spring paint, and embellishments and get crafty.

Step 1. Paint on some color

You can choose any way you like to paint these, but I recommend painting the roof, perch, and base all one color. Let dry.

Step 2. Add some more color

For a colorful seasonal contrast, pick a second color for the middle part of the birdhouse. Paint and let dry.

Step 3. Go wild with washi tape

Add embellishments to the roof of your birdhouse. In this example, I used washi tape.

Step 4. Seal your washi tape (optional)

My washi tape stayed down, but depending on the washi tape you use, you might need to add Mod Podge to seal.

Step 5. Glue on flowers & rhinestones

In addition, you can use craft glue to add faux flowers and rhinestones to various parts of the birdhouses.

Step 6. Go bold with buttons

And another fun option that looks good around the base of the birdhouses is buttons!
