5 Reasons I'd Rather Give up Chocolate than Baking Soda

You love chocolate. You need chocolate. But as a working (or not) mom on a budget, you need baking soda more. Why? Read on to find out the top five reasons why baking soda is essential to your life as a mother, a homemaker, and a coupon clipper.

1. Baking soda cleans almost anything, even the kitchen sink
Once a week, sprinkle a cup of baking soda up and down the sides of the sink. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub it away with a wet cloth or sponge. In that short time, and with a little bit of elbow grease, it removes just as much sink gunk as any commercial chemical abrasiveand without the chemical smell.

2. Baking soda deodorizes
Stinky sneakers? Seal them in a plastic bag with about a half a cup of baking soda. Let them sit overnight, then throw the sneakers in the wash. Voila! Sneakers are fresh and clean and ready to go back on your kid’s stinky feet.

3. Baking soda is delicious
Or, at least, it makes things delicious. If you leave out the baking soda when making chocolate chip cookies you get flat, hard biscuits with chocolate lumps. If you leave out the chocolate chips, you get soft, yummy sugar cookies. Which would you rather eat?

4. Baking soda is good to you
Stinky feet? Baking soda can help with that. More significantly, baking soda can be an essential part of your all-important mom-feet-pampering routine. Dissolve three tablespoons of baking soda in a tub of warm water. Lock bathroom door and insert earplugs. Lower feet into tub and scrub gently. Heaven.

5. Baking soda is fun
Rainy day doldrums be gone. Your kids are bouncing off the walls, and no one can stand another Sponge Bob rerun. So pull out baking soda, white vinegar and maybe food coloring. You can make volcanoes by filling the bottom of a plastic bottle with baking soda, then pouring the vinegar over the top. Instantly, “lava” comes bubbling and frothing out the mouth of the bottle. Or you can just pour the whole lot of vinegar and baking soda together in the sink and see what happens. Super fun and guess what? It also happens to be a great way to clean out the garbage disposal.
