The True Classics: Holiday Traditions

1. Hot Buttered Rum

I believe rum has always been an important component of American holiday celebrations, so whip up a batch of batter  (make extras to give away as holiday gifts with a bottle of rum!) and enjoy.

Tools: Mixing bowl, mixer, airtight container
Glass: Old fashioned or glass Irish coffee mug
Extras: cinnamon stick for garnish
Servings: 2 cocktails

Hot Buttered Rum Batter ingredients

  • 1 pound light brown sugar
  • 1/2 pound unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

For each cocktail

  • 2 ounces aged rum {dark rum works fine}
  • Boiling water

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat together softened butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and spices until well combined. Refrigerate in an airtight container. It’s best  to make the batter at least 48 hours in advance of using, so the spices have an opportunity to mingle (batter will store for up to a month).
  2. Remove batter from the refrigerator at least 6 hours prior to serving, to allow it to soften.
  3. In a preheated mug, combine 2 heaping Tablespoons of batter with the rum.
  4. Top each with boiling water and stir well to mix.
  5. Serve with spoon or swizzle stick.
