Every parent knows that not all Christmas accessories are kid-friendly; glass ornaments and porcelain figurines can make you feel more stressed out than spirited. But you can make the holidays fun for those of all ages with projects that celebrate the season and are easy, safe, and enjoyable for little hands.

Kids will love taking part in decorating the home, and in creating handmade gifts that are merry and bright. You could even go one step further and throw a kids’ holiday craft party!

1. Festive window clings

Kids will love sticking these cheery stickers onto frosty windows, and since they’re so simple to make they can help with the entire process. Create favorite words and seasonal motifs, then use them to add a dose of holiday spirit to any room of the house.

Materials

  • White Elmer’s glue
  • Hand soap
  • Food coloring
  • Three mixing bowls and spoons (I used ceramic bowls and plastic spoons)
  • Red and green food coloring (You could also use white if you can find it to get a more opaque white window cling, but it looks fine without it)
  • Plastic wrap or plastic sheet protectors
  • Paintbrush

Directions

  1. For one color, mix together 1 tablespoon of glue, 1 small squirt of hand soap, and enough food coloring to get the desired hue.
  2. Paint the glue mixture onto plastic wrap or sheet protectors, creating whatever shapes or words you’d like. You’ll want a reasonably thick and opaque layer, but it doesn’t need to be bulging.
  3. Repeat to create other colors of your choice.
  4. Allow the glue to dry overnight. Peel the motifs off the plastic and stick to the window. These clings adhere quite well, and will continue to do so all winter long.
