1. Young Frankenstein (1974) PG
Mel Brooks directs as Gene Wilder plays the famed Dr. Frankenstein’s grandson in this hilarious take on Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Frankenstein. After years of trying to live down the family’s reputation, the young Dr. Frankenstein attempts his grandfather’s original experiments with hilarious results.
2. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) PG
Is it a Christmas movie or a Halloween flick? Maybe it’s both. The Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, Jack Skellington, grows tired of the same old routine and makes a plan after seeing the twinkling lights, happiness, and warmth of Christmastown. He kidnaps Santa Claus and takes over, hoping for a new lease on life.
3. Hocus Pocus (1993) PG
A 1990s favorite, Hocus Pocus takes place in Salem, Massachussetts 300 years after the Salem Witch Trials. The Sanderson Sisters (who are indeed witches) have some business to attend to after Max accidentally brings them back to life on Halloween night.
4. The Addams Family (1991) PG-13
And you thought your family was strange. Follow this eccentric family as they try to weed out an imposter (who’s out for the family fortune) who pretends to be their long lost Uncle Fester.
5. Frankenweenie (2012) PG
Another not-so-scary film directed by Tim Burton, a young boy named Victor conducts an experiment to try to bring his dog Sparky back to life. But once Sparky returns, he’s not quite the same and Victor must convince his neighbors and his parents he’s the same dog he’s always been.
6. Beetlejuice (1988) PG
A recently deceased couple (now ghosts) quickly becomes annoyed with the new owners of their home. They do what any ghost would do in this situation — they try to scare them out. Their plan doesn’t work as expected, so they enlist the help of Beetlejuice.
7. ParaNorman (2012) PG
In this cute animated movie, Norman, a misunderstood kid who can speak to the dead, works to defend his hometown against a centuries-old curse.
8. Teen Wolf (1985) PG
Michael J. Fox plays a troubled high school student who discovers an unusual secret about himself — he’s half human, half wolf. He must control his emotions to avoid turning into a wolf when he’s angry. Classic 80s movie!
9. Rise of the Guardians (2012) PG
Based on the bestselling Guardians of Childhood book series by William Joyce, this animated movie features some creative incarnations of childhood heroes. The Immortal Guardians of Childhood team up against Pitch, an evil spirit who is ruining the earth. It’s not technically centered around Halloween, but a great movie for any time of year.
10. Ghostbusters (1984) PG & Ghostbusters II (1989) PG
When three unemployed professors set up shop as a ghost removal service, they’re faced with a daunting task of saving New York City and dealing with a river of ectoplasmic slime. You won’t lose any sleep over these classics, but they may be a little too intense for some kids.
