Play Matters: Building a Playground with Coupons.com and KaBOOM!

play matters

On Wednesday, August 20th, some amazing transformations took place as Coupons.com joined forces with KaBOOM!, the City of East Palo Alto and the YMCA of Silicon Valley to build a 4,200-square foot playground.

building dreams together

Bringing life to an empty space that was rundown and devoid of any real purpose is something that kids and families in the community could only dream about for many years. Coupons.com employees (Couponians) eagerly shut down their computers and rolled up their sleeves to help make a dream a reality in just eight hours.

As we continue to further our Coupons for Change mission of helping to ensure all kids get a fair start in life, we partnered with KaBOOM!, a non-profit focused on bringing essential play back into kids’ lives. At the end of the day, more than 400 exhausted volunteers from Coupons.com and the community beamed with pride as they looked at all that they had accomplished.

Here are some pictures from the Build Day:

We dug into an empty field and filled it with mulch and concrete to form the foundation for the play structures. All materials were carted in by hand!

It took many strong volunteers to help construct and place the beautiful swing set.

Volunteers from multiple organizations came together to work on multiple projects including the one above, building a wooden structure that provides shade for kids and families. We also built benches and picnic tables so this will be a wonderful area for groups.

A talented group of artists drew the outline on a very large blank wall and more than 20 volunteers helped turn it into a vivid mural.

Transforming a large space and a community with bright new playground equipment, a beautiful mural telling the story of the richness of East Palo Alto, benches, arbors and more is something that could truly only happen because of the power of WE: everyone coming together to do their part.

When we hear the laughter and excitement from the kids at the official ribbon cutting on September 6th we will feel an overwhelming joy knowing that something as simple as building a playground has made a difference and positive impact for children in need.
