Keep Kids Busy During Summer

One month down, two to go. If summer vacation is starting to wear on your nerves and your pocketbook, then listen up! We have a list of freebies and discounts that will keep kids busy all summer long.

During summer you can get some great deals on activities around town. From mini golf to movie theaters, you’ll find the deepest discounts on weekday mornings.

  • Alleys across the country are offering free bowling this summer. Kids can get two free games of bowling every day this summer when they register at www.KidsBowlFree.com
  • Buy a membership to one museum and get free or discount membership to hundreds of other museums, science centers, zoos, and aquariums.  A yearly membership for a family of four costs around $75.
  • Kids can see movies for just $1 this summer through Cinemark’s Summer Movie Clubhouse or Regal’s Summer Movie Express.
  • If you’ll be traveling this summer, a season pass to Six Flags is good at 13 of their theme parks across the country. Only $59.99 a person for a family of four.

Many stores offer free or low-priced kids workshops to get parents in the door, but you can still take advantage of them without making a big purchase.

  • Lowe’s and Home Depot offer free workshops where kids build a wooden project, learn about tool safety, and take away some freebies like an apron or goggles.
  • Michael’s Craft Stores has Free Make-it Take-it events for ages 3 and up. Some events require a nominal materials purchase. Past projects include picture frames, bracelets, hair clips and personalized mugs.
  • At Lego’s Monthly Mini Model Build you’ll learn to build a mini Lego model like a lawn mower and then take it home for free.

Why not do some good with all that spare time this summer? There are plenty of fundraising and volunteer opportunities available to kids of all ages.

  • Host a lemonade stand that will do a lot more than quench thirst. Alex’s Lemonade Stand was started by 4-year-old cancer patient, Alex Scott. Before passing away at age 8, Alex raised $1 million towards childhood cancer research. Since then, kids across the country have continued her mission, raising more than $50 million. Register on the site and they’ll send you a kit complete with signs and flyers.
  • At VolunteerMatch you can filter search results by volunteer opportunities that are good for kids or teens. Choose something they’re interested in like a beach cleanup day if they love the outdoors or helping out at a charity marathon if they love sports.

Final Word: Between attending book clubs, bowling alleys and movie theaters, you may need to stop for a lunch break. Go to the “Local Coupons” tab at Coupons.com to find discount restaurant gift cards in your area.
