Green Tips for Your Next Outdoor Party

It’s your party, and you can cry if you want to. But you’d serve the environment better with a less emotional approach to your soirée. Going green with your next social event will benefit the earth and make you feel good at the same time.

Follow these planet-friendly party tips for a greener get-together.

Stick with e-vites.

Skip the pretty paper cards and save a tree. You can find creative e-vites all over the internet. Also, electronic invitations often give your guests the opportunity to RSVP quickly and easily.

Use the stuff you’ve got.

You know those cool serving pieces and place settings you got for your wedding but have never used? Don’t wait—use them now. You’ll have a little extra cleanup at the end of the night, but you won’t be sending even more plastic to the landfills.

Personalize cups.

If you use disposable glassware, buy the kind made from recycled or sustainable materials (look for packaging labeled “biodegradable” or “100% recycled content”). And break out the Sharpies so everyone can personalize their cups—you’ll save money and cut down on the number of cups going into the trash.

Light it up.

Cut down on electricity and create a romantic (and flattering) glow by placing lit candles everywhere. Use soy or beeswax candles which, unlike petroleum-based paraffin candles, won’t emit toxic, sooty fumes. Citronella candles will help keep the mosquitos away.

Recycle.

This is a no-brainer, but if you don’t do it already, it’s a big (green) step to take. Check everything you’re about to throw away to see if you can use it again. If you can’t use it, put glass, paper and plastic products in the recycle bin.

Got a wild hair to throw a party tonight? Here’s a great way to chill beverages in time for an impromptu backyard barbecue. Place wine or other bottles in a bucket. Add a layer of ice, followed by a layer of salt (coarse or table). Repeat until you almost reach the top. Fill the bucket with cold water to just below the ice line. The water in the ice bucket will be colder than normal, chilling your beverages in less than 10 minutes.
